Stornoway is a busy wee town full of independent shops.
Stornoway is a busy wee town full of independent shops. I particularly like An Taigh Ceilidh where you are encouraged to practise your Gàidhlig. Only downside there are a few one-way streets which are confusing / frustrating if you don't know where you're going.Guest review byHallinan - 8.0

This review is more about Lewis and Harris, Sandwick is a small suburb of Stornaway. It has an interesting memorial to HMS Iolaire. We spent 4 nights on the island. Although the weather was pretty awful, the island is lovely and we spent a fair bit of time touring Lewis and Harris. The Butt of Lewis is nice and there is a lovely walk to Eoropie bay with lovely sandy beach. We are interested in birds and found Red necked Phalorope, GND, Red throated Diver, Golden Eagle, Guillemots, Fulmars etc. Take the drive across Pentland Road it is lovely and good for birds. Sadly we didn't really have raptor weather (lots of rain). Stornaway is a bit limited - if you want to dine out book well ahead as there aren't many places and they fill up quickly. We enjoyed the Boatshed at the Royal Hotel for dinner. EVERYTHING closes on Sunday (including most of the petrol stations so beware).Guest review byPaul A. MooreUnited Kingdom - 6.0

There’s not much to see and do in Stornoway but it is an excellent base for exploring Lewis and Harris. It was easy to reach the main tourist spots of Ness, Callanish, Carloway and Gearrannan Blackhouse Village. Also not far to experience the stunning scenery of Harris including the famous Luskentyre Beach. In Stornoway itself, the walk to the Iolaire Monument and the visit to the Lewis Castle Museum were both worth doing. The best place for lunch was Lantair.Guest review byIsobelUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Sandwick was pretty quiet but it was just outside of Stornoway which was good enough for us as the property was nice and cosy. Most of the sights we went to see was out with sandwick, more stornoway and further afield. So I’m not reviewing sandwick. The property location was fine for us to travel to and from what we wanted to seeGuest review byRichardUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Stornoway is an interesting little town with Lews castle and grounds well worth a visit. It is a very good starting point to explore some of the island-places to visit include Callanish standing stones, the Black House, the Black House village and the broch, all of which are on the one road that leads directly out of Stornoway. There is also Harris to visit and famous and stunning beaches, but we ran out of time !Guest review byHazelUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Book your meals in Stornoway in advance, busy even on a Tuesday. Also make sure you don't try to pack too many activities into one day, if using local buses. They can be few and far between, although they arrived as per timetables. Boatshed good place to eat and drink. Thai cafe also nice food but no alcohol licence, so take your own bottle.Guest review byMargoUnited Kingdom
