FAQs about hotels in Santiago de Compostela

A Valuable City with Rich History

The city of Santiago de Compostela is the capital of Galicia and the place where the Apostle St. James is buried. The city’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its distinguished old monuments around the Cathedral and the tomb of St. James.

Made of granite, the spectacular Baroque facade of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela features massive bell towers and statues of St. James. The Obradoiro facade of the Cathedral is one of the most exceptional examples of the Spanish Baroque period.

Surrounded by magnificent buildings, the monumental square of Plaza do Obradoiro is one of the most historic squares in the world and the heart of Santiago. You can stay in one of the hotels, guest houses or apartments Booking.com offers nearby this majestic square.

The final destination of the Medieval pilgrimage route (El Camino de Santiago), this city is the best place to enjoy fresh fish and traditional Galician bread. Galicia is the seafood capital of Spain and the right place to savor Salpicón de Mar (seafood salad) and Pulpo á Feira (octopus cooked with salt).

The Christian pilgrimage route of the Way of St. James passes by Santiago de Compostela Airport, which is 16 km away from Galicia’s capital.

I and my friend arrived as pilgrims on the Camino.

I and my friend arrived as pilgrims on the Camino. We took a fabulous rooftop tour of the Camino the day after we arrived but would have liked to have visited the other museums. We had to leave the next day because we had other commitments already booked unfortunately.

As a pilgrim who has walked into Santiago twice, I will always enjoy the energy of this city. It's so special. There are great restaurants and cafes/bars and plenty of historical buildings to visit. The cathedral is a must and the museum. Whether or not you are a religious person, the historical significance is impressive. Walking in the city outside the old center is easy and the modern areas have all the amenities one could need.

Beautiful small city with a stunning cathedral.

Beautiful small city with a stunning cathedral. The cathedral is free to visit. We did queue for about 40 mins for entry but it was well worth it, especially seeing the extraordinary spectacle of the swinging of the huge incense censer at midday mass. Not to be missed.

I love the old city and parks of Santiago de Compostela.

I love the old city and parks of Santiago de Compostela. It's a beautiful and spiritual place and lively too. As a vegetarian, I found it very easy to find good and nutritious food. I will definitely be visiting again to soak up the vibe.

    A beautiful city.

A beautiful city. With a constant flow of pilgrims arriving daily I was encouraged how warm the welcome is for visitors. I felt very comfortable wandering around the city. I plan to return and go to other nearby locations as well.

Its a beautiful city with lots to see and do.

Its a beautiful city with lots to see and do. It was where i was beginning my start of the camino from here to Finsterre onto Muxia I had enough time to stroll round, to the roof top tour of the cathedral, visit the pilgrims museum and also get great tapas and great food. Loads to choose from A very easy city to navigate and walk around, with beautiful architecture. Bonasi was a great cafe with delicious food and coffee, definitely do the roof top tour and get some tapas. The only thing to remember most places are closed on Sundays so be mindful of this and many places close for the afternoon and reopen for food between 7:30/8:30pm so depending on when you like to have lunch/dinner keep this in mind

Small terrace apartment perhaps not quite as big as I was expecting from the photos I saw when I booked. We had a balcony (which is a must) otherwise it would have been too small. Very clean with a lovely view. Balcony is not completely private but we used it often. Shower was good, BEST pillow in Spain and bed was very comfortable. Property is not far from the Cathedral and is very close to the Mercado. Also very close to bus stops for transportation to the Airport. (Only €1 each).

Best hotel we stayed in along the Camino Ingles, and a brilliant end to this pilgrimage. A stone's throw from the Cathedral, and all of the attractions. We had the tasting menu at dinner and the quality of the food/wine was exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff, including ordering the taxi to the airport and waving us bon voyage. Quiet rooms even though close to Santiago's centre.
