Neighbourhood information

Windermere is England’s largest lake and the surrounding area is packed with loads to do. The locality of the lake consists of many beautiful towns and villages. Bowness-on-Windermere is one of the most bustling towns in the Lake District. The busy pier is the point of embarkation for wonderful lake cruises and ferries to Hawkshead. There’s also art galleries, antique stores and many cafes in the town. Ambleside is a picturesque town in the Rothay valley, situated a mile from the northern tip of the lake. A hiking hotspot, Ambleside’s access to the lake is through the adorable village of Waterhead. Featuring waterside cafes, cosy shops and tranquil walking paths, this little hamlet is one of the best places to visit in Windermere. The southern point for Lake Windermere is the small village of Lakeside. It features charming inns and restaurants, the Lakes Aquarium and the Haverthwaite railway station for the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. Newby Bridge is a quaint village that straddles the River Leven at the southern end of Lake Windermere. It’s just south of Foot Fell Park and is a stop along the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. To fully appreciate all that Lake Windermere has to offer, a lake cruise is one of the most popular things to do in Cumbria. It is an extremely relaxing way to enjoy the area’s stunning mountains. Leaving from Bowness, there are two types of cruises. The 45-minute cruise in a modern sightseeing watercraft that takes a circular path around the lake’s 18 wooded islands. Alternatively, there are also 90-minute cruises that travel from Bowness to Lakeside and then back again. This cruise is on an old-fashioned steamer ship that has allocated seating. Both cruises offer commentary on the lake’s history and points of interest. Windermere town features a range of shops and eateries, as well as a traditional cinema and The World Of Beatrix Potter attraction within minutes of the cottage door.
