Since childhood, I have always loved old buildings, especially the old cottages found throughout Ireland. They have a character that just cannot be replicated in a new build. When I left school, we were in the middle of a recession, which meant very little work or opportunity in Ireland. Therefore i went working abroad for 10 years farming in Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, Spain, Germany, Holland, England and even Uzbekistan !
Having returned home, I was determined to spend my life restoring old Irish buildings and saving them from demolition.
I have always loved the traditional crafts and skills which are found in old buildings, I love the textures and designs from centuries ago.
I first visited Jackdaw Cottage in September 2021, It was a derelict shack with both roofs fallen in; it had been used as a cattle quarantine centre since 1970! From that very first visit, I could picture in my head the cottage restored to its former glory. I knew that with my passion for heritage buildings and restoration, I could make the building come alive once again! Now it's restored and is ready to welcome people from all over the world and become part of its history too !
The panoramic views from Jackdaw Cottage are simply unbelievable, the Mournes, Slieve Croob, Leitrim and Dromara hills surround the Cottage. The cottage is situated 500m up a private lane, with complete privacy we are surrounded by farmland with grazing cattle, sheep, horses and an abundance of wildlife such as Red Kites, Lapwings, rabbits, foxes, pheasants, starlings, swallows and of course the resident Jackdaws !
The location is unmatched due to its privacy you'll feel miles from anywhere but the nearest town Castlewellan is only 5 mins away, it has great pubs and restaurants, the forest park has beautiful walks around the lake and up the mountain Slievenaslat, the peace maze which is 2.7 acres in size and also mountain biking for more adrenaline! The popular seaside town Newcastle only 10 mins away with its rich cafe culture and beaches. Tollymore forest park is only 10 mins away. With the Mournes being so close the hiking opportunities are endless! Silent Valley is only 10 mins away for those wanting a gentle walk. Game of Thrones studio tour is only 15 mins away! With countless film locations, ancient Dolmens, historic estates and beaches all here, it's a perfect location!
