The origins of Paratico are very ancient, as evidenced by the remains of lakeside pile-dwelling settlements dating back to 2000 BC. After the year 1000, Paratico saw the rise of the castle of the Lantieri family, lords of the place. It was almost entirely dismantled in the early 16th century. In addition to agriculture and fishing, textile and mining activities (sandstone quarries) were of some importance. According to an ancient tradition confirmed by the Cronaca della Famiglia Lantieri de Paratico (Chronicle of the Lantieri Family of Paratico), Dante Alighieri stayed at the Lantieri castle, who later used the image of the castle of Paratico for the description of Purgatory in his Divine Comedy.[6 The parish church dedicated to S. Maria Assunta dates back to the 15th century. Around it corpses were interred before the construction of St. Peter's cemetery; it was enlarged and renovated in a composite style in 1724 and further embellished in 1878.
