Keerweder is a fascinating historical estate with a rich heritage. It was proclaimed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1692 and one of the first farms in the Franschhoek Valley to be granted to Europeans by Governor Simon van der Stel. It was allotted to Swiss-born Heinrik Muller from Basel who named it Keerweder, meaning both to "turn back" due to its unique location at the foot of a mountain range and to "come again".
