I will definitely be returning because Maerumpung beach is beautiful (didn't think I'd EVER see bio phosphorescent plankton!!!!), Ban Phe has some incredible small food outlets, Thai people are amazing, and the Makmai Villa does everything you want.. with a smile! For us you need to be careful where to stay the main town is...
For us you need to be careful where to stay the main town is disappointing as are all the resorts and the beaches which we visited for a few hours. If you like to be approached by beach sellers trying to sell you various wares then fine but the whole point of visiting an island is to chill and our resort in my view was completely chilled with very little guests and having the whole resort to ourselves whilst everyone else went to commercial beaches. Rayong is a not too big city on the Gulf of Thailand with great beaches. what I miss is good restaurants and coffee houses. it is all very Thai, not clean, a lot is broken and will never be repaired. streets are good, Thai driving crazy and dangerous. Thailand is the number one in road accidents and casualties in the world. Simply the best hotel we have ever stay at. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Breakfast great. Had a Cobb salad for the first time in the restaurant. Woukd highly recommend it. This resort has it all, perfect accommodations, price, restaurants. When things get back to normal again, they will have a coffee, cake shop, souvenier shop, multiple swimming pools and very clean beach. Mostly very hospitable staff. I have returned there many, many times and it has never been a disappointment ever. Almost feel like family when we go there now, everyone who has stayed remembers us. Beach garbage a bit normal amount. Not too dirty but you can never get too much of cleanliness. Cleanliness can always be improved. We brought a lot of food so not much buying around from eateries. No working ATMs can be a problem if you don't have scan and pay. I don't like carrying that much cash. Other than that, its a perfect quiet get away. Everything i needed was in walking distance. Great for a stopping point to Koh Chang and Koh Mak. Interesting because a more real Thai experience. You can if you want go from Rayong Tour and one stop on the sky train go to Sawanabuhmi airport for 195baht.
